We are excited about 2009 and the many fun filled and exciting Extreme Cowboy Racing events that are on the schedule.  The formation of EXCA has been an thrilling and challenging adventure! Many people have worked tirelessly to create an association that you will be proud to tell your friends about.  This is the latest issue of your monthly newsletter, The Brave Horse.

You will receive it each month electronically around the middle of the month.  The Brave Horse will be full of interesting stories, EXCA event results, point standings, human interest stories about EXCA members and Tips and Tales from our founder, Craig Cameron.  We encourage you to communicate your suggestions for stories and ideas that will make  The Brave Horse fun, better and more informative.

RAIN, REIN, REIGN

Cam Schryver, director of Thacher’s Horse Program, and eight student riders trailered their horses to Acton, California for an Extreme Cowboy Race competition. The objective: introduce Thacher students to this unique type of competition. Adding to the already demanding event was weather that included just about every kind of wet and cold you could name (rain, sleet, hail, wind, and snow).

Dampened but undaunted, the Thacher riders and their mounts worked well together, bringing back four belt buckles and a saddle. The student riders took the first three spots in the youth division, with Laura Benard (riding Slash) finishing in first place, Chris Colson (on Podoca) second, and Cayce Cover (on Corkey) in third. Thacher also furnished the sixth- through tenth-place finishers: Wohona Delgadillo (Katie-Ann), Ashley Sauvain (Cisco), Katy Bartzokis (Spear), and Olivia Stonehouse (Giraffe). Raquel Reissinger (Amigo) also competed for Thacher.

This was a new brand new experience for everyone but Cam, the reigning Extreme Cowboy Champion since his victory at the national competition in November of 2008. Extending the Thacher sweep at Acton, Cam won the weekend’s pro division (and a new saddle).

“I know the kids were a little nervous going into this, but I was pretty confident they’d realize how well prepared they were once they started the competition,” said Cam. “Our riders were entered in the youth class and were, in my opinion, just standouts. We swept first through third place. Laura Benard took first place by going through the finals course guiding Slash with just a thin rope around his neck. Everything looked beautiful and she really blew away the competition.”

Contestants in Extreme Cowboy Races are judged on the basis of horsemanship and the time it takes them to move with their horses through a series of challenges involving obstacle courses, reining, roping, and cattle work. With Thacher's gymkhana season just getting underway, the Horse Department is planning a few Extreme Cowboy-type competitions to the mix of point-scoring opportunities. And Cam is looking into the possibility of bringing and official Extreme Cowboy event to campus in the future.

It was a great weekend despite the weather. "The kids were in great spirits, rode very well, met some nice people and took home all the buckles and cash the youth class had to offer," reported Mr. Schryver. "It was a great ride home and we all can't wait to go again."

FAQ's

What are the options for scoring "multiple go" events?

The event host has two options for scoring multiple go events.  Let's say there are two goes in the event; one option is to score both goes on a cumulative basis.  The scores for both goes are added together and the total score for both goes is how the horse/rider teams place in the event. The second option is to have every horse/rider team compete in the first go. After the first go, the field is cut to a smaller number to come back for the second go. In this scenario, all horse/rider teams will receive points for the first go and the horse/rider teams that compete in the second go will receive a second set of points for the second go.

Is a Horse/Rider team disqualified if the Rider unintentionally becomes dismounted?

If a Rider unintentionally becomes dismounted, he/she may continue if he/she is able to catch their horse without help from anyone; within the course boundary. If someone helps the Rider catch the horse or if the horse leaves the boundaries of the course, the Horse /Rider team is disqualified from that round.

Is EXCA going to require judge's training or certification?

We are currently working on the development of a judges' training / certification program. It is our goal to implement the training/certification program for the 2010 season.

Please keep sending us your questions. Your input is what will help us continue to improve and refine EXCA. EXCA is your Association. Your input is our most valuable resource for continuing to improve EXCA.
