Equitation, Developing a Good Seat
Riding properly is a matter of developing good habits. Good equitation techniques are important whatever you do, from the simplest tasks to the most advanced maneuvers. No matter if you're catching your horse, mounting him, riding the trails, working cattle, jumping a fence or spinning a hole in the ground, your skills dictate your level of horsemanship.
Great horseman are made, not born. Like any craft, horsemanship must be worked at. It's your level of desire, determination and dedication that counts. Study the methods and exercises in this chapter to build a solid foundation for your horsemanship. How far you take it will be up to you.

MESSAGE FROM OUR NAB CHAIRMAN - BILL CAMERON |

Ask the Judge:
Debbie Boltman of EXCA South Africa asked: "How Can We Judge and Keep It Easy? 1/4 points are difficult to understand and tabulate".
Answer:
Judging Obstacles & Keeping It Simple
The average score is 5.5 with no mistakes. When scoring an obstacle such as a waterbox, one is watching the approach very carefully, watching for straightness, willingness and taking care not to stop. If they hesitate or stop, that is a deduction of ½ to 1 point from the 5.5 average score. If they back up or turn away, it might be 1 to 2 point deduction from the 5.5, giving them a 4.5 or 3.5.
If a horse's approach is clean and they walk right thru like it is not even there, I would give them a 6.5. If they trot thru a 7.5 or 8 is given. And if they lope thru, a 8 or 9 possibly. Also the departure must be clean to get a 5.5. If a horse steps out crooked or stumbles there is a deduction from 5.5 such ½ to 1 point.
I don't like using ¼ points because too many fractions to add and you can be very accurate using ½ increments.
