BRAVE HORSE

SEPTEMBER   2013

Welcome to the Extreme Cowboy Association

We are excited about 2013 and the many fun filled and exciting Extreme Cowboy Racing events that are on the schedule.  The formation of EXCA has been an thrilling and challenging adventure! Many people have worked tirelessly to create an association that you will be proud to tell your friends about.

This is the latest issue of your monthly newsletter, The Brave Horse.

You will receive it each month electronically around the middle of the month.  The Brave Horse will be full of interesting stories, EXCA event results, point standings, human interest stories about EXCA members and Tips and Tales from our founder, Craig Cameron.  We encourage you to communicate your suggestions for stories and ideas that will make The Brave Horse fun, better and more informative.  The Brave Horse the best newsletter in the equine world.

Please forward your ideas and suggestions to Frank Turben at webmaster@extremecowboyassociation.com

Craig Cameron - Relax a Horse

This in one of my favorite ways to relax an overly anxious horse - one that shows a little fear of being handled.  You should be able to touch your horse all over his body without him being afraid.  This desensitizing exercise helps take the fear out of the horse.

Rub a long, soft, cotton rope all over the horse's body in a quiet, deliberate and rhythmic way.  Run it up and down his legs and around his flanks, heart-girth, and hind quarters.  If he's saddled, pop the stirrup leathers, pick, up the back cinch, rock the saddle horn.  Make sure the horse is comfortable with being handled all the way through his body.   if the process spooks him, stop, wait and then start again.  This "sacking out" helps him relax physically, mentally and emotionally.

MESSAGE FROM OUR NAB CHAIRMAN - BILL CAMERON

Ask the Judge:

Queston:

How would you score me if I did simple lead changes in the daisy chain verses loping and possibly dropping a lead?

Answer:

When I am judging, if I see someone trot the daisy chain perfectly, I will score them with a 5.5.  If I see someone loping and turning nicely but they drop a hind lead during a lead change attempt, I will subtract .5 point from a possible 7 or 8 score.  So if the horse drops his hind lead twice during the daisy chain, I would subtract 1 full point from a possible 7 giving him a 6.

If a horse did perfect loping and simple lead changes, I would score them between 6 and 7.  To receive a 7, 8, or 9, one must lope the complete pattern with no mistakes.

 Winning Story of the Month:

Genuine 007 and The Ryan's - Our Story

In 1998 we went to Texas to look for a stallion, that's when we met and purchased Genuine 007 as a two year old. We kept 007 at the Carol Rose Ranch for the following breeding seasons and took him back to Canada after breeding, Tom and 007 began their bond! Genuine 007 was introduced to the mountains, rivers, cattle drives, the Prairies and amongst many other things Canada has to offer, snow!

In 2001 Genuine 007 won an AQHA World Championship in heading! We could not have been happier to have been at the Worlds to witness his success first hand. My wife and our three sons and I started our journey north back to Canada, celebrating along the way.

December 2003, we had to make the most difficult decision....to have a farm sale and a dispersal sale of our horses which included 007. We were very pleased to know the new owner of 007 would be a great friend and vet, Dr Rick Kutz. In 2004 Genuine 007 went to winning six more World Championships at the Palomino World Show!

November 2012 we had an opportunity to re-purchase Genuine 007. So Shelly was in talks with Dr Rick and made the deal. What a perfect birthday present for me J ! Welcome back to Canada for 007! We had a huge home coming/birthday party and it was at that moment we revealed to our family, friends and everyone else the greatest gift of all, Genuine 007!

Since November 2012, Tom has been getting reacquainted with 007 and has been taking him several Extreme Cowboy Races. February 2013 was his first showing in Washington where 007 placed second. Then in California (at Bill Cameron's) for four consecutive races (two in Feb and two in March) and having the highest points and winning the buckle. Next race was at the Calgary Stampede Exhibition in April 2013 where 007 placed third overall, right behind his son Q. Tom moves up a category and shows Q in the pro events including twice at the Calgary Stampede. Glenn Stewart also shows a son of 007, Jet who won the first Extreme Cowboy Race Event held at the Calgary Stampede

Genuine 007 is proving once again to be a great competitor and enjoying Extreme Cowboy Racing.

We hope to be showing this fall including the World Show in non pro at Hamilton, Texas.
