BRAVE HORSE

JUNE 2014

Welcome to the Extreme Cowboy Association

We are excited about 2014 and the many fun filled and exciting Extreme Cowboy Racing events that are on the schedule.

The formation of EXCA has been an thrilling and challenging adventure! Many people have worked tirelessly to create an association that you will be proud to tell your friends about.

This is the latest issue of your monthly newsletter, The Brave Horse.

You will receive it each month electronically around the middle of the month.  The Brave Horse will be full of interesting stories, EXCA event results, point standings, human interest stories about EXCA members and Tips and Tales from our founder, Craig Cameron.  We encourage you to communicate your suggestions for stories and ideas that will make The Brave Horse fun, better and more informative.  The Brave Horse the best newsletter in the equine world.

Please forward your ideas and suggestions to Frank Turben at webmaster@extremecowboyassociation.com

Ask the Judge:
Question:  How do I use spurs effectively during a race so that the judge won't mark me down?

When you use a spur you are ideally to place the rowel next to the horse's stomach and use small quick taps if a horse does not want to go forward.  You keep your feet close to the horse as to not to stab or insult your horse in any way.  A person should not have to kick a horse with spurs.

When you  tap a horse or squeeze a horse up to an obstacle and he refuses, lowers his head and starts backing up while you are leaning forward and then you stop asking to go forward, you have taught him that he can quite the spurs or legs any time he wants.

It is not how hard you use the spurs, but when you use them.  No horse can be bullied into anything.   The spurs are used to maintain a respect that is already there, not to make them do something they don't want to do.

When I get a refusal, I simply calm down, relax my legs on a horse and get ready to be there awhile.  I don't take it personal, I do not get uptight, I do not get mad, and I do not quite... ever.
